A Song, a Book, and a Giveaway!
Let me begin this post by painting you a mental visual of Geneva asking for help....
A woman struggles up a steep, ragged hill, clutching the hands of her two tiny daughters. She's got the weight of a million little things and a few big things strapped to her back and its beginning to rain. Soon, it becomes a freezing, torrential downpour. A friend with a free hand appears. "Can I hold an umbrella for you?"
The woman laughs, weary. "An umbrella? For me? No. No, I don't need an umbrella. I mean an umbrella might be nice but like I said, I don't NEED one. Thanks for offering though." Silently, the friend extends her arm and shields the woman from the storm. But the woman still can't see to take another step. Tears can blind like rain.
She collapses under the shelter and chokes out, "I guess I did need an umbrella. Maybe I could use a friend. I might even need a little bit of help." And then, desperately, "PLEASE??"
Can you relate? I know you can. As women, we are really good at showing up and loving and caring and filling all the needs of the aching world. It's our job. But when the tables have turned and we find ourselves with that annoying little thing called need, we cringe and squirm and return that casserole dish filled back up with cookies.
I wish this wasn't true. I wish I knew how to ask for help. I wish I knew how to receive it. I'm trying to learn these skills. I have such a long way to go. I recently found a song and a book that are helping me see need from a new perspective.
First, the song. Verse one undoes me every time.
There Is a Mountain
lyrics by Carolyn Cobb
Verse 1:
There is a mountain only the lame can climb
There is a table only the hungry find
Only the beggar will have the currency
When need is all you need
Verse 2:
There is a victory only the conquered gain
There is a glory that you get when you give up your name
Oh the peace when you finally yield your fight
In surrender rise
Verse 3:
Come to the mountain, He carries the cripple to the feast
Come to the table, come sit, He has saved you a seat
Come and eat and drink without money and without a cost
He has paid it on the cross
Chorus:
Come with open hands in need
Come hearts broken, bended knee
A gift can only be received
Received
Bridge:
The King bends low to wash our feet
To give Himself as an offering
To lead us home to that wedding feast
We taste it now, at last we'll eat
Of that richest food, oh that well-aged wine
The shroud will lift, our tears He'll dry
Come hungry souls, be satisfied
Both now and forever
Second, the book.
Yes! I'd LOVE to win! Shari is one of my favorite writers too...along with you. ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the sweet compliment. :)
DeleteThat last comment was me, btw. Didn't know if my name needed to appear or not.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading your blog, Geneva, though I'm not one to comment much. I'm not positive, but think maybe I found it through Vinettes.
ReplyDeleteI'm anxiously awaiting the day I see Dragon Wings for sale.
And btw... I love to hear about others thinking about minimalism--I agree, getting rid of stuff absolutely gives your brain more room to think. I can't explain it, but I experienced it.

Mmmm wow this book sounds SO GOOD. love reading your blog and still praying you decide to do a podcast one day 🤪😉 -yolanda
ReplyDeleteI'll only start a podcast if you agree to be a cohost. ;)
Delete.......I don't know or understand why it's so hard to admit a need. (I think it may be pride) At 45 I still find it so hard to admit I have needs. But I sure do LOVE to help all those around me. I sure do want to read this book
ReplyDeleteI'd love to read this book, since I've enjoyed Shari's blog for years! I don't remember how I found your blog, but I got to know your grandparents a number of years ago, so of course I heard about your grandma's grandchildren. :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog posts and can relate so much on the asking for help thing! I'd love to read this book! I think I first saw that you were blogging on Instagram.
ReplyDeleteYou already know I read your blog :)... and that I also enjoy Shari's.
ReplyDeleteI am excited for her book release.
I don't usually enter giveaways, but I can't wait to read this book. I have no idea how I found your blog - I started following it as a lonely young mom living in a far country (don't worry, if I should chance to win, I will tell you about my connections local to you).
ReplyDeleteHey! I also love Shari's blog and would love to read her book. I don't know how i came upon your blog but I've been following along for a long time and am happy to hear, you plan to post a bit more often. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited about this book! You two are both very talented writers!! And I wish I knew, why is it so hard to ask for help? It's a current struggle in my own life.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun giveaway!!! Geneva, you have inspired me many times through your blog posts and I am always happy to see a new one from you! I am also a reader of Shari's blog and find her writing exceptional. She knows how to convict and inspire her readers and I can't quite imagine reading a whole book written by her. It would have to be good!!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading this book! Shari is also one of my favorite writers.
ReplyDeleteHelp. We all need it. You spoke truth, how we still push it off even when we desperately need it.
I learned about this small space through my sister, Glenda, when i was also in a far country. I'm enjoying living more local, and am pleased to read that you want to post more often.

Ok, so I won't deny I'm commenting because I would love to read this book 😂 But I can also say I read both of your blogs and am blessed by the honesty I've found in both. It's this kind of honesty that encourages me to press on. It's not those who never struggle that have the greatest victory, but they that struggle through and with God's help come out victorious. I see that struggle and victory in both of your blogs and I want that victory as well. Thank you for your honesty.

I found your blog through the articles you wrote for Daughter's of Promise. You have such a real, relatable and raw way of writing. I would love to read this book based on your review alone as I am not familiar with the author, yet. Thanks for the recommendation. One can never have too many books! :) Thanks for sharing the way you do!

I absolutely loved your list of random things about yourself. I also love names and joke that I would have twelve kids just so I could name them all. :)
DeleteThanks for posting this! I can so relate to needing to ask for help but not being humble enough to do it! But I do appreciate very much when others lend a hand when I need it! We're here for each other and I want to do my part in helping others as well!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog posts! You are so good with words! Keep them coming! 😊
Blessings on your day!!

I don't remember how I discovered your blog but I really enjoy it. You definitely have a talent with words. I would love to read Shari's book. -Jane
ReplyDeleteYes! I was planning to buy that book once it ever becomes available but sure, I'll take a stab at winning it. :) As far as how I found your blog, I think I saw a comment from you on someone elses blog. Gina's maybe? Cant quite remember.
ReplyDeleteSomehow your mental visual of asking for help sounded so familiar. When Kaiden was a baby I was stumbling up a steep ragged hill in a freezing downpour but need an umbrella?? "No. no, I mean an umbrella might be nice but like I said I don't NEED one." Yes that was me. But it is a good feeling when someone actually takes the "umbrella" I offer, so I'm pretty sure that if someone's offering, they actually want me to take their "umbrella" too. So I'm trying to learn in the giving and taking compartment. Thanks for your post! Marj G
Thanks for posting... Your blog inspires me... To be more real, honest, to admit my own great needs...
ReplyDeleteI love both your blog and Shari's, and have been longing to read her book!
Not sure how I bumped into your blog here... Maybe a reference thru Daughters of Promise? And I love reading blogs, esp of those I (ish) know! I remember how, as girls, our paths crossed some at different churches, even tho we don't keep up now. But keep writing! :) And I'll keep enjoying!
Hi Geneva! I enjoy getting to know you better through your writing. God has given you a talent and I'm glad you are using it. Love ya, Aunt Gwen

ReplyDeleteI'd love to win the book! I found you because of Wendy's share on Instagram.
ReplyDeleteI think my original comment was lost. But anyway, I wanted to enter this back when I first saw the post but forgot until I saw you back on Instagram. That song is on my Spotify playlist, too.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that you had a blog till now!! I enjoyed following you earlier on IG, but then you disappeared!! I've enjoyed Shari's blogs , and her book sounds interesting!!
ReplyDeleteSorry. I am Dena... Knew your family from way back!
